Technical interview preparation guide
How to Ask Clarifying Questions in a Technical Interview
Clarifying questions should reduce uncertainty quickly. The goal is not to delay the answer; it is to identify the constraints that determine which answer is correct.
Confirm the outcome
Ask what the system or user needs to accomplish and how success will be judged. This separates the requested implementation from the actual job to be done.
Clarify scale and failure
- Expected volume, latency, and growth rate.
- Which failures are acceptable and which are not.
- Consistency, privacy, and availability requirements.
- Existing components you are expected to reuse.
Ask about hidden edges
Ask about empty inputs, duplicates, permissions, partial failure, and concurrent updates only when they could change the design. Tie each question to a decision rather than running a generic checklist.
State your assumptions
If the interviewer does not know an answer, choose a reasonable assumption and say so. Then proceed. Clear assumptions make the reasoning easier to evaluate and easier to revise when new information appears.
